ADHD and Porn Induced ED: What is the Correlation?
« on: June 16, 2012, 11:54:44 AM »
I did some research on ADD/ADHD and have come across some startling information. ADD/ADHD is indeed a condition where the sufferer has problems with dopamine regulation and uptake!

I feel like I've had ADD/ADHD my whole life (lack of focus and enthusiasm, lack of creative and inventive energies, forgetfulness, etc...) Whenever I take a stimulant however (coffee, guarana pills, etc...) my overall mood, socialness, and creativity goes through the roof. In addition, when I took an aderall given to me by a friend, I was super horny all day long. I never got a full healthy erection, but I had urges to MO again, and again, and again.

My ultimate point: How is this all related, if indeed there is any relation to begin with? Does PMO at an early age with no real sex partners for many years cause ADHD? Does ADD/ADHD cause ED?

So much to learn.

I've seen many a guy diagnosed with ADHD experienc eremission of ADHD symptoms once they completed their reboot.

ADHD doesn't cause ED. Although porn-induced ED and ADHD seem to involve a low dopamine and dopamine receptrors, there is more to the story for both.

I'm hoping once I complete mine that will be the case. I'm also seeing a sleep clinic this week to check for sleep apnea.

This is anecdotal, but I definitely believe there is a correlation for me. My ability to concentrate on getting things done was very high as a child, I was not easily distracted, I took extreme pleasure in the most simplest things. I could focus on creating a detailed ornate drawing, copy code out of a magazine for hours, all before 10. After getting addicted to porn, I found myself getting bored with my favorite activities within minutes of starting them. I started to realize this was a pattern that began with porn itself, as soon as I would start watching porn, I couldn't stop seeking a succession of highs. Within minutes of watching a clip, I look for another. And another, and another. I was not like this in any area of life. Even browsing the internet on my favorite topics was never that addicting. I would look at stuff for an hour but use that as inspiration and smoothly transition into focusing on my own work. With porn, I am stuck watching until I finally decide to O.

I am very analytical and skeptical when it comes to the cause/effect relationships with all things in life...and I can virtually guarantee that porn gave me ADHD symptoms. I am positive my ED is porn-induced as well. I can feel internally there is this same feeling of numbness, the brain is looking for something very stimulating. I can feel myself trying to generate a high feeling...but only porn can provide that feeling. It is so incredibly frustrating because it can't be willed into happening. No amount of relaxation or self-talk works. The brain is just numb.

I also am getting checked for sleep apnea...but like the other areas I've looked into, it will probably be a null factor.

Hi Gary.  thanks for everything you are doing.

I guess the ADHD and Porn addiction question boils down to a "what was first? the chicken or the egg" argument.

1) Does porn addiction cause low dopamine and lead to ADHD symptoms?

2) Or do ADHD patients use porn to "self medicate" chronic naturally low dopamine?

Immediately clear to me are the close correlation between porn addiction symptoms and ADHD symptoms.  On your YBOP website you list; inability to concentrate, brain fog, chronic fatigue, lack of motivation as symptoms of chronic porn use.  This reads like the list of ADHD symptoms described in DSM IV.  Other ADHD co-morbids you list include: depression, anxiety, irritability, and  social anxiety.

As the OP in this thread states, the connection is dopamine regulation.  For porn addiction, it is the dopamine verses prolactin cycle described well on reuniting.info that causes the crash in dopamine after orgasm, probably leading to the ADHD-like symptoms.   In ADHD patients, studies have observed lower natural levels of dopamine than the control groups.  The low dopamine found in ADHD people often leads to high risk behavior (driving fast, love to fight or argue ect...), addiction (substance and also including porn) and a poor executive functions such as long term planning and ability to finish projects.

I would be willing to bet that many ADHD people are using porn to "self medicate" , which in turn is leading to an intensification of the symptoms over time due to the dopamine- prolactin cycle after orgasm.  A re-boot will not cure this type of ADHD, but will very likely make the symptoms much more tolerable.

In contrast, it is entirely possible that "porn induce ADHD" is indeed a stand alone disorder which closely mimics true ADHD.  This type of ADHD can probably be cured by re-boot.

Under a doctors care, I started using very low doses of ADHD medication brand name Dexedrine (Dextroamphetamine) recently.  I take 5mg twice a day.  Since I started using this medication, I have not had any urge whatsoever to PMO. In fact, with my increased dopamine and related executive functions, the idea of PMO now seems absurd to me and I have not even been tempted to do it.

I do not know if I have porn induce ADHD or the regular ADHD.  However, I am finding the the Dexedrine is really helping to make my re-boot easy.  the extra dopamine is doing the trick.  This is in contrast to some forums where I have read that ADHD patients are using adderall during epic porn binges.

Keep us posted about any research you hear about ADHD and porn addiction.  Take care!

Certainly ADHD medications can help improve focus for someone who is trying to stop PMO, especially during the initial stages.  Just be weary that one of the side effects of amphetamines such as Adderal is ED or delayed ejaculation.  Maybe not a huge issue for someone trying to get off PMO to begin with, but may become a problem during the later stages when trying to resume normal sexual function.

I was using Adderal for studying purposes and noticed severe side effects, especially ED that was much more noticeable in comparison to being off Adderal.  I was still in the very early stages of rebooting at this time, but it's just something I noticed and correlates well with the known side effects of drugs like Adderal (check out the drug monographs for info regarding side effects).

Hi, yes I have heard that some get poor libido on adderall.  IMO, this is from the levo-amphetamine salts (25% of adderall) that can have strong effect on the peripheral nervous system.  Known to reduce blood flow to extremities, including the man parts.  However, you must also know that the majority of adderall users report increase libido and better sex.  A dangerous combo for someone with ADHD who might hyper-focus on porn.

I could easily see adderall abuse and porn abuse becoming co-morbid.

Ironically, when I took adderal from a friend to try it, I MO'd like 7 times in one day. My libido was insane, but I still was only semi-hard.

I looked into some ADHD forums and it is pretty common to hear stories of excessive PMO while on adderall.  I fact, some claim it makes the orgasm experience much better. For what ever reason, Dex is having the opposite effect on me, it brings out the best of my rational brain that tells me PMO of a stupid waste of time and energy!
