    Hi all.

I've read many articles that state that excessive masturbation can increase the level of cortisol produced by the adrenal glands and that this can cause the body to be stuck in 'flight or fight' and that excessive adrenaline is released.

I'm wondering if this has as much of an impact as dopamine in PMO addicts given that it creates similar symptoms - e.g. stress, anxiety etc.

For the record, in recent blood tests my cortisol level was 12% above the 'normal' upper threshold and my PMO addiction has gone on for 15 years.

No studies have been done on the long term effects of masturbation. Studies on short term effects of masturbation show little effects on cortisol.

Instead of masturbation, what about addiction. Drug addiction can really alter stress responses. Whether this occurs with behavioral addictions is unknown (I think).

It's funny, I've been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and an underactive thyroid. My doctor told me m cortisol levels were high according to a blood test. Maybe there's a correlation between that and the excessive masturbation with porn use?

Animals do not have sex or masturbate five times a day. Im not even sure there are any animals that masturbate. The only ones capable would probably be primates. The others would not be able to put a paw around their penis. And there were two african tribes that did not know what masturbation even was. There is no way that you could masturbate that many times per day and everything remains okay as far as hormonal levels. Sex is meant to occur only once in a while not constantly. Imagine the kind of adreline release that you get when you are very scared. Now imagine this occurring over and over all day. You will probably begin to have problems. Being frigthened is a special situation just like sex. It is meant to occur only once in a while.

Good post. There's alot of truth in the point made that this addiction can cause or contribute significantly to all kinds of stress related mental and physical disorders.

Frequent masturbation and ejaculation stimulate acetylcholine/parasympathetic nervous functions excessively, resulting in the over production of sex hormones and neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin. Abundant and unusually amount of these hormones and neurotransmitters can cause the brain and adrenal glands to perform excessive dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion and turn the brain and body functions to be extremely sympathetic.(sympathetic = flight or fright reactions)

Engaging in compulsive masturbation, causes problems with concentration and memory. This is a dangerous side effect of compulsive masturbation and signals that the brain is being over drained of acetylcholine. This behavior can also drain the motor nerves, neuro-muscular endings, and tissues of acetylcholine and replace it with too much stress adrenalin and cortosol which is where memory loss, lack of concentration, and eye floaters come from. To fight these symptoms, the chemical levels in their body needs to be balanced. It takes time.

I'm very interested in this because I don't know if my problem is pmo or adrenal fatigue...
    How can you tell?

Makes sense. I've addicted to PMO for over 15 years and I have generalized anxiety disorder, as well as panic disorder and have for many years. My body has been stuck in fight of flight for a long time and I'm trying to break both my PMO habit and my anxiety disorder.

Maybe so. I definitely think there is a connection. No science to back it.

I tend to suffer from sensitivity to bright sunlight. On my last nofap 50 day streak my reaction to sunlight improved immensely.

But when I am in a rut of pmo'ing I tend to also be binge drinking and other such abuser to my body.

    Our bodies truly are temples.
